What is a psychoeducational assessment?
A psychoeducational assessment is a process that explores an individual’s cognitive, processing, academic and socio-emotional strengths and needs as they relate to the learning process.
What are cognitive and processing based skills?
Some examples of cognitive and processing based skills are verbal comprehension, visual-spatial reasoning, processing speed, memory, phonological processing, attention, executive function and visual-motor integration skill development.
Through an assessment of these various areas and a student’s academic skills a student learning profile is developed. When appropriate, a diagnosis is made e.g., Learning Disability, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Intellectual Disability.
This learning profile is then used to specifically target intervention strategies designed to help support a student’s academic growth and success in school.
What does a psychoeducational assessment involve?
The first step is a meeting with parents to better understand their concerns and review their child’s developmental and academic history.
Next are the assessment sessions with your child. I typically meet with students 3-5 times depending on the nature of the referral question.
I then meet with parents to review the assessment results and recommendations. When appropriate, these recommendations may include special accommodations or modifications of educational programs. A written report will be provided.
Next, I review the assessment results with the child so they can gain a better understanding of their strengths and needs as a learner.
I am also available to support parents in sharing the assessment results with the child’s teacher and school.
